How good to see what I believe is a new name and a relatively rare device (those migrating letters). We have enjoyed this. Many thanks to Malva.

Cruncher -- yes I too got hung up on how far letters could move. Since the preamble didn't say, I assumed they could go anywhere in the clue. But then almost all actually just moved within the same word. By my count there were two that did not, unless I misunderstood the wordplay in those. To me this is a shortcoming in the puzzle since it highlights an inconsistency in how the trick was applied. Did Malva initially mean for all to be within the same word but wasn't able to do so consistently? The puzzle would have been easier if we could have relied on the former treatment.
Furthermore, I would say that "migration" really should mean going further afield than just staying in the same word. Otherwise it's just moving somewhere else in the same country.
Cruncher. Did find the anagram (migration) required. Was saying that after completing the puzzle realised that I had solved 1A as a straightforward clue - tread and the anagram required both being synonyms of the 8 letter word of which we needed 50%.
Crates - yes, that occurred to me to. I'm guessing it's an oversight, though arguably the clue wouldn't stand as it is, as the usage you mention would need a regional indicator?
