Hello again after a couple of weeks absence. And I am late this week because SWMBO took me to Winchester ( beautiful cathedral etc) but for a weird reason. One of her friends organised for her husband to drive 4 tanks for short periods! Can you believe it?! And there were others joining in the fun!!! Add the fact that it lashed rain nearly all the time and the mud was inches thick ( literally) on my boots and you can guess just how much I enjoyed it. But SWMBO wanted me to seem to enjoy it so as not to spoil it for her friends. Oh well.
But now I still have one clue I can't understand ( there was another but it's been answered for someone else). " Junk stores set back, with variable percentage earned." I have R?y?l?y so royalty fits and that could be the percentage earned but I don't get anything else. Could one of you great people help me please.

My goodness! You are a learned lot! And I admit that i have no idea what the last few entries are all about. But back to Steven. Yes he always seems so polite but he is a bit whimsical about SWMBO which is what intrigued me ( goodness how interesting retirement is proving to be!). If he is around, I'd be interested to know why he calls her that. Does he always call her that?
I'd better go to bed....

It's just a whimsical reference. I remember a chap before the Iraq war who always referred to his wife as 'Madam Hussein.

It was the Rider Haggard book that started it. Or, rather, one of my teachers used it in a lesson ( I can't remember why but I do remember he made us all laugh) and I thought it a good name for my mother. But no, i don't use it to her face ( are you mad? I am enjoying life!). I only use it now on this site. I call her " my mother" when talking to my mates or teachers or the like. And with her, I use the name she prefers. I am sure you can all guess what it is. Perhaps I should be polite and use it here if need be. But it's been fun calling her SWMBO. I suppose the joke has " run its course" (again a quote from my great teacher in case you think I use sayings like that all the time)

Another contribution just before bed.
It is an odd thing this business of how to call your parents when you are no longer a little child. For what it's worth, my brothers ( all older) and I always called ours " mammy". She was Irish and that was what she expected. So we did, right until she died.
So, Steven, iI suppose what I am saying is " call her what you feel best with which might be different in different situations.
When I get up tomorrow, the Saturday Jumbo will await. Something to really look forward to.

I think within families we all settle on what feels best , my parents were always Mum and Dad - just as I and my late husband were to our two daughters.

I always know there's going to be trouble when I get called 'Mummy Woo' by my youngest, my reply is usually 'What do you want?' ;-)

As an infant it was always mammy and daddy. Later it became mam and dad. I once facetiously called my mother Kathleen. She hit the roof. Never again.
