I was providing a link which is thr first as far as I know that says the two things are different.
I don't really care though- I'll leave it to the experts. Setters shouldn't use words which have so many spelling variants

I haven't got the crossword so maybe the OP had made some other errors or some assumptions then when giving this pattern.

Yes saw that earlier too, I think setters tend to use dictionaries and reference books as a rule.

The OP has added the two 'e's near the beginning themselves - they are uncrossed in the grid.

I have checked half a dozen reference books and not one has meleguetta with the a.

Here's hoping Kate Mepham/ The Telegraph use those for the answer and not Chambers as a point of reference.

Has certainly made it dificult if not interesting for many, not just us on here presumably.
