Clue for 5down is followed by three dots and 6 down is preceded by three dots. Can someone please explain the significance of these dots as I can see no obvious connection between the clues or the answers. Thanks.

Yes I have Heartbroken and Nowt as the answers but can't see the connection. The clues are 5d Listen, the first ball rolled in crushed... and 6d ...nothing in the beginning

They are called ellipsis linked clues, where the two clues produce a single meaning surface. I.e heartbroken out

They link to provide a single surface reading but these clues are usually treated entirely separately as far as definition and wordplay are concerned.
