I see what you mean by spelling but Italian would not really fit as they speak Portuguese in Brazil.Obviously a setter's gaffe.

Last time the Guardian messed up the same city it was 'Paul' who was the setter - odd that.

It is the Portuguese spelling of the city (except the tilde over the "a" in Sao)
