Thank you Captain

17a I think is atom.

Would welcome confirmation of both
I can't get past AVON (in England) but can't see it yet.
What's the reasoning behind Atom please/ just can't see anything pointing to that
A + (Beef) Tom(ato) ?

Seems a bit elaborate though.
Atom could be part of Tomato
Question Author
Hi Fiction Factor Atom =a small amount a-to-m ?

I cant see Avon at all !
Where's the 'in England' though folks?
Never thought of that, but I can't see where England fits in or see the definition
Question Author
Unless any one comes up with a better answer I'll settle for atom
No, the definition for 'Atom' (little bit) is in the wrong place.

Odd clue -or maybe a very clever one?
Some crossed posts there- I was responding to Mamyalynne. The "in England" bit at the end spoils that parsing I think
It does.
Question Author
Can only think that the a might be wrong

It comes from :
16a Balkans take Greek island initially over transport (8)
???O?A?S
I thought Samovars ? Any thoughts ?
Kosovans
Kos o(over) Vans
So does that make 17d O?O? now please?
Oxon?
Looks good.
OxoN
Ignore that= doesn't really work although I can see that beef could just about be OXO at a stretch
