Yes it is frequently used by compilers, as noted in the IVR (International Vehicle Registrations), but sometimes they use ES, as Italy may be I or IT.

As with most "crossworders" I have an inquiring mind and got interested in cryptics through doing crosswords with two sets of clues, easy and cryptic. Gradually found myself doing less and less easy and more and more cryptic. Thanks to the good folk of AB who answer my frequent questions I seem to improve.
