1st clue listed ... not 1a as answers have to be fitted in like a jigsaw...you will need to solve a lot of the clues and then start fitting them in the grid...

I've just remembered why i stopped bothering with the Guardian crossword on Saturdays.

I thought I'd completed the puzzle, but have got ECZEMA as the penultimate clue across at the base of the grid. Any ideas how I could be so wrong when all else seems to fit?

I think you might have entered the q solutions the wrong way - the french number should run across. Eczema should be at 6d

Thanks Toorak - I do indeed have the French word going down, but that must be over on the top left, whereas 6d is pretty distant over at top right. But will continue to work on it. Thanks again.

I don't like the fit it in the grid yourself ones. I don't have the commitment for them.

I know Tilly but although I enjoyed the Guardian's standard cryptic clues I found I couldn't be bothered (or couldn't get my head round) the ones where there was a twist such as no definitions or an incorrect letter or superfluous letter in the clue.

I'm making a pig's ear of this one because I didn't read the instructions properly. Usually in these alphabetical ones they are in order of the first letter so that's how I started. I did not notice that this time they are ordered according to the last letter. But .... still progressing.
