there is a misprint in the defn...
11a Great steeplechaser opens up to cover ground - back on his rostrum , as of old (10)
????LEA??? ...think the corrected letter is N
1a Fellow in a Government backed by Chinese ran from troubled country (6) ????AN .....possibly M for correct letter
29 D IS Scottish. There are two letters 'not provided by wordplay', they're at the beginning. The Greek starter is a four-letter word, take off the beginning and also put in an 'i' (one's put in).
I got 29d once I realized the 4 letter word for appetizer applies to Middle Eastern as well as Greek.
I now have the SE corner and 1a also. I was stuck on Kim Jong, Korean.
Realized that the answer must have F.
I know 11a is nostrum but do not have a 10 word definition for it.
There is a word with leaves at the end but not sure if that is the answer.
Now working on 14a, 17d and 18d. a long way to go..
Hankir, 17 D is an anagram -'foremost of hyenas leaving' indicates a letter to be removed first. There's a misprint in 'spurts'.
I don't understand your 'Tutsan for 11 A'. 25 A starts with a D.
Thanks Nac.
Tutsan is another word for the answer.
Feel stupid for not spotting 17d. As you said, very simple.
Word for keep in 25a could start with R or D. Got it.
Four remain.
Is the last letter in 1d, Q?
4th letter in 7d, D?
3rd letter in 15d, D?
3rd letter in 33d G?
Then only answer not solved is 19a.
19a need S at the end.
I think 15d can also be spelled with S. So I will change it.
Because only four of the letters are clued, the entry to 23a is ambiguous. The second unchecked letter could be one of two possibilities because of alternative spellings. Has anyone spotted a way. Has anyone spotted something I may have miSsed to resolve this ambiguity?
