Listener Crossword 4462 : Squares By Phi

No, I am not a genius - the simple truth is that the puzzle was put up on the Times website this morning, albeit originally without a title or setter.
New theme to me, and some difficult clues, but once I found a home for the first square, the rest followed fairly easily. Thanks Phi, that was a good workout. Now for the coloured pencils.

If I've understood your alternative for the four lines correctly, I agree it's mathematically sound, but it makes a non-standard assumption about the grid which would disqualify it, in my opinion.

There are two options that both conform to the requirements of the preamble. Both can be considered to be in accordance with the thematic name, depending on the particular examples chosen for reference, though neither is an exact representation. I don't see how one of these options could be judged incorrect unless there is something that I, as a non-expert in the field, have not discovered in my research.

Hello. New poster, but long-time lurker here. The philosophy of discussion without any spoilers is much appreciated.
