Is that the full clue ???

'Pent up'
would fit with repressed.
Just seen it.
Spent up (broke) minus 'S' = Pent up
Must be (S)pent up but the wordplay doesn't seem quite right
I agree. Poor clue. But that's how I saw it.
I'm just not clear why 'following' S indicates removing S.
I suppose pent up following S gives spent up which is broke but it still feels it's not quite right. Never mind
