I thought the pit was where the orchestra is seated
^^ It is, strictly speaking. The pit is typically the part of a theatre between the front of the stage and the first row of public seating where an orchestra will sit of the production requires such.

It's usually lower than the first row of seats, hence "pit". Typically, punters don't sit in the pit.

Not the greatest of clues, but L-i-K's answer is clearly correct.
