Each clue consists of two parts, the first providing the solution for the left-hand grid and the second for the right-hand grid. However, a letter must be added to one of each pair of solutions before entry in its grid. All 26 letters of the alphabet are used once and the new words thus formed are not defined in the clues. The word lengths indicated refer to their respective pair of grid entries.
Mally, with no puzzle in front of me and these extra instruction, I am at a loss. My answer is a guess becauseI cannot fully parse it but thanks for the ling.
Sorry Tilly don't know if the 2 answers are related... haven't started this one yet...just finishing off the 3 from the Times. They are not usually related although one set of answers in the past has been birds or trees or similar. I will make a start soon!
@ Donny - I have looked at the puzzle that many times and it is still gibberish - I haven't a clue what you need to do - and it is a great shame as I thought I would enjoy today's.
Jozeph, there are 2 grids. PERCHES goes in one, and I have INDE(X)ED for the other.

6d perches goes in the left hand grid ..indeXed goes in the right grid.
11a is split as .....Write one's name at church for redemption...answer penance ...then add another letter possibly Z to give penzance which goes in left grid
other bit of clue ...and relaxation- rode around and got better ...anagran of rest + rode = restored ...enter in right grid.
25a clue is split as ...Composer to sit back , absorbing all ... answer Tallis...another letter will need to be added to form a new undefined word which will go in the left grid
for the right grid clue is ...ready to change from the very start ..answer is anagram of ready to = year dot ...enter in the right grid
