My last clue: 20d. Slides of photographs picked up. I assume the answer is either shutes or chutes, but can't see which or why?

Chutes (slides) - "shoots"; photographs, picked up; heard

Thanks Lie-in King. I got the 'as heard' reference, but that could be either shute or chute, as they're alternative spellings with the same definition. I just didn't know which to put!
Hi bookperson - I went with 'Chutes' rather than 'Shutes' simply because it's by far the more common spelling IMO - has to be your choice in the end :-)

Thanks Lie-in King, I agree. Speccie can hardly say it's wrong, if a more specific reference to spelling isn't given!
