My last one, and I've got nowhere.
1 D. Troubled, directing point back behind extra covers (5) I?de?
NB. For thematic purposes, there may be two extra words, not necessarily adjacent.

Extra words "troubled" & "back" ?
Question Author
Aah, I should have got that! Thanks very much, Lie-in King. The extra words are probably correct too, but I don't need them as such.
'troubled' + 'back' = DELIA
Question Author
Thanks, PM - I switched off when I had my grid filled and all the thematic entries, so didn't round up half the people!
I only managed to link 9 of them. I can't make Keith, Jamie or Nigella (although there's a possibility of John for that - but then I'm stuck for the other John in column 9). Any ideas for those?
And I've actually got 4 sets of extra pairs to play with - 'mind+set', 'ragged lady', 'yell+out' (I think this might not be a true pair) and 'Queeney's+husband' (could that be Jamie?)
Question Author
PM, I think Ragged Lady leads to Nigella. I didn't do your others!
Question Author
I've just remembered - I thought I needed 'Yell' and 'Out' for the answer (the 'out' removes the c/clubs)
Thanks for 'Ragged Lady' that sorts out my John problem.
I think you're probably right about 'yell out' but I couldn't justify the 'yell' in Chambers.
Looks like I have another option for Jamie ('Murray+Walker' could be a sporting ref/double def) but it's a bit too obscure for my liking.
Question Author
PM, I quite like the Murray Walker one! I had another look at the Yell clue but nothing sprang to mind.
...and 'mind set that's screwy' could be the full definition for 4dn.
I still need 'Keith' and I'm short of 'Gary' now.
I've got Keith now - Hester Maria Elphinstone was nicknamed 'Queeney' and was married to Viscount Keith.
This is getting ridiculous now!
Gary is at the end of 3dn, although the clue works with or without the extras.
There are far too many liberties taken in this puzzle for my liking (I can see at least 8 words that could be dropped from the 'straight' clues).
Question Author
PM, well done on tracking down the names, how they're arrived at. I don't know about there being other words (that could be dropped), I wasn't thorough enough to notice. I did see the spelling mistake in the title.
Thanks again Neveracrossword, I missed the typo.
Looks like the setter didn't include any ambiguities to make the extra effort worthwhile - I think your way was the right way to tackle this one.
By the way, I can also get John, Keith and Gary from 'Murray+Walker' (the way I'm using it) and I haven't even tried the other names.
I must be missing something more decisive.
...(if you're still around Neveracrossword)Yell is a village in Shetland, and the answer to the clue is Shetland dialect .
