I'm completely stuck on 20D - the clue for which is "The king's in danger, pal (4)" and I have the following pattern -A-E. One answer would seem to be 'Mate' which of course fits with the very last word but makes no sense whatsoever with the rest of the clue. Help !!
Many thanks in advance folks.

Check mate in chess
mate- checkmate!
Think Chess - if the king's in danger it's nearly (check)mate
Doesn't quite work because check is when the king is in danger, check mate is the end
