Also baffled by parsing of 25a, 1 a, 3d.

Very many thanks to all. Not taken by brie=French produce (there are other things); should have got Saladin (was trying to extort anagram from about a boy....Abou something). Don't like 3d. And author in question a little obscure? Never heard of one of books. But thanks again.
