Listener Crossword No. 4552 Mortality By 'eck

Can't find another thread so ...
This is 'Puzzle of the Year' for me thus far; but at a price as it has been a very tough solve.
The five different types of clue made for difficult solving as one had to keep in mind the different possibilities for the type of clue. And, to make matters worse, the clues themselves were fiendish when the type of clue had been identified!
For me, the satisfaction came from the endgame. The PDM was quite rewarding and I raised a smile at the ingenuity of the setter.
Thanks, 'Eck. Keep up the good work.

The clues were tough, especially the ones with moved letters, and I got frustratingly stuck in the SE corner for quite a while. But the effort was certainly rewarded, for the PDMs that appeared along the way and the final denouement which was beautifully done. No ambiguities either, so extra bonus points there.
I was perhaps a little too dismissive of last week's puzzle. It was very good, but it seemed to me like a lot of slog for a rather meagre pay-off. This one took me around the same amount of time, but was worth every minute spent. Classic Listener stuff, by 'Eck!

Excellent - a real challenge after a few weeks of easy/medium graders.
I spotted the theme reasonably early, but was held up by looking for specific rather than more generic victims.
The lovely degree of cross-checking (from the variety of clue types) ensured that my final grid was definitively correct - always very happy-making.
Thanks 'Eck - a splendid puzzle.
