Wow ! To be honest I loved the anagrams! But am I right that he (she?) got one wrong? The anagram is of "coordinates" but I think the answer might be "containerised". At least that fits my other answers. Am I right?

And does this person know some obscure stuff!!!!
The clue is "Man who sold provisions and spirits to the French army" I have ?I ?e?d ?e?. But I can't fond a word to fit. Can someone put me out of my misery and let me of to bed please?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had misspelled "Smetana", as you reasoned. What about the anagram? Am I wrong there too?

And thanks to the other respondents. I had become confused. But now all is sorted. I am very grateful.
And so to bed

Alan - hope you slept well. The setter, Didymus, is also known as Doc (Tom Johnson) and Gozo, the prolific crossword editor of the Spectator (where his puzzles are not of the hardest). A former winner of the Generalist is none other than Jonathan Crowther, the illustrious AZED in the Observer.

Hi Woodside 187. I did sleep well thank you. I don't quite know why I became a bit confused last night but I did. But, thanks to the great folk on this site, all was sorted. Thanks for the info about Didymus. I am relatively new this whole crossword scene but enjoying it more and more as I develop some skills. To know that I can solve puzzles set and solved by real puzzlers is strangely satisfying . Vanity I suppose. But I also like the friendship which is evident on the site. So many people like yourself are really generous with your time and knowledge. A big thank you to all of you.

Maybe my thank you got lost so I'll have another go. The help of people in this groups has been so important to my enjoyment of crosswords that I wanted simply to record that. Alan
