Help please with filling the left hand column...to make real words ... some there is only 1 choice like Using and Agreed but the others?
Have changed the E to D in row 3 ...do i need T H E before it in that row?

Didn't understand the pre-amble or the method of alteration, Salad Dodger, but chose exactly that way of producing the superior threat. My "solution" (if that is what it i) shows the "bolder choice" on the left-hand side.

Look at which of the two eight letter options (from the verse in question) will go into the first column and make new words.

I found EV the hardest of the 3 big ones this weekend ...enjoyed IQ the most and quite liked L...this was my least favourite....too many new words in it for me...

I think it was originally in the right position given the stipulation in the preamble and was the subject of the first adjustment. Thereafter we see the sam with a bellyful.

Yes, it was a good week for puzzles (Azed too!) but EV gets my vote - and I think the clue for SHIRR was just perfect given the theme.
