What was the clue please?
Question Author
lands held in a system of holdings, made up of detached pieces.

The thing is, Rundale, which is the answer to the above clue, does not fit with all the other clues, which are definitely correct, as we have triple checked them. I was wondering if anyone had found an alternate spelling
Yes, I remember being unsure of that answer. I vaguely recall something like roundel was needed to fit the pattern
what pattern did you have please? Rundale definitely fits the clue
Could it be 'Hundred'?
The use of "hundred" for a division of a county has what the OED describes as an "exceedingly obscure" etymology. It may once have referred to an area of 100 (or possibly 120) hides, though a "hide" is not a specific area: instead it was conceptually the amount of land required to support a family
I remember now that the only word that would fit on two different threads was RUNDLES but I'm not sure it's an agreed alternative spelling
Only a different viewpoint here.

Rundale was an Irish term for land division; I believe Factfinder is a Scottish paper and the equivalent term there is 'Runrigs' - might that be a possibility?

Whatever the outcome would you please keep us informed when you have the answer confirmed creamegg?

yes, I will let you all know what the answer is when the paper is out on saturday.
I'd like to know too, was determined to make 'Rundles' work but couldn't.
