A while ago,, I asked about the very odd crossword in the December edition of SWMBO's magazine. There are no clues for most of the across clues, just a letter.

I have come back to it again and again. " Obsessional" is among the nicer things she has called me. I have completed most of it ( don't know whether they are right!). But there's a few that I simply can't get. Anybody interested in helping with such an old and odd puzzle?

I will if I can, Steven. The Generalist again?
Question Author
Thank you,scorpiojo. They're interconnected.
There are two which are "crossword logic" and both of them are single letters.
The first is a five letter word and the clue is M. That's it. M.
The other is a four letter word and the clue is P.
I'm not sure if them being upper case is significant. It would be for the across clues.

Let's start with those,shall we?

Question Author
Sorry. I should have said that yes it is the Generalist puzzle.
Steven - the vehicle registrtion plate "M" is for Malta
Could Malta be the answer?
Question Author
Thank you,jj109. Could be!
Possibly Peso fot the other one. Unlikely to be Peru as the abbreviation P belongs to Portugal
The Phillipine Peso has a "capital" as oposed to lower case P with two horizontal lines (similar to the Uk pound "L" or the Euro "E")

To be honest though it could be many things! Do you have any crossing letters?
Question Author
Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry for the delay. Mummy had me working!
If Malta is right (and it looks good) an across word ( with other letters I have) could be " national" and that's a real possibility. If so,, the second letter of the four letter word would be ' a' .
Another across word (k) could be ' kappa'. If ( and we are into big ifs) that is right, the four letter word becomes ? A? P. And the clue is P.

Sorry,I meant SWMBO of course. Her name on this site.

Qatar, National, Malta and Pawn? (Amo 26d?)
Steven, I have just seen where the clue lies from the link that was put on your last question. Could N = Nitrogen rather than National?
It seems that there are a number of alternatives for the abbreviations.

I can't think of anything that could be PA _ P
If it is nitrogen, then it would be PE_P
and if it is not kappa and was peso, it would be K - - O - (kilos ??) and Peso would fit

BUT I am not sure, there are other combinations that may be correct. It is 10 pm where I am, so shall sign off now. Good Luck!
Question Author
Thanks scorpiojo. I had amo. Qatar looks good ! Not sure about pawn. The ' k' word would be ?a?n?. Note the k is lower case so it can't be a place name.

Incidentally,I don't think jj109 is right about kilos. The clue is ' originally, worry in Wuppertal' . I have ' angst' which gives an a in the k word: ? A???
s
Nitrogen, Peta, karat? Do you have the wuppertal answer, Steven?
That would work...
Question Author
Thanks MargoTester. As always you people are so kind!

Still not sure about'peta' . Can it be used as a word?
But we're nearly there! SWMBO will certainly be pleased. I do have one traditional clue left.

" Becomes entangled with". I have h?a?a?l?. I can't think of a word ( except ones ending in 'able' ) Any help gratefully received
s
I think that would be ensnarls - would that help with across clues
Question Author
Well,it would mean that ' omega' is wrong.
We would have o? e?s

S
Question Author
By the way, it's an upper case O so maybe Omega is wrong anyway.

The only name I can think of is'Owens' . Wasn't there an athlete called Owens? But where does the abbreviation come in ?

See what SWMBO means about being obsessional.....
