I am obviously being very thick but I can’t parse my bung-in for 16d - opening protected by covers and traps (4,5) - cake holes but why?

Cakes (covers) round Hole (opening)
Cake holes (traps; mouths) - 'hole' (protected by) 'cakes' (covers)
Trap is slang for mouth
The human mouth is sometimes called a cake hole.
cake = covers
holes = traps

Thank you everyone. I had sussed cake hole as mouth but overlooked trap and not sure about cakes = covers.
