We couldn't decide regarding ISTLE and IXTLE
Agister and agistor are both used (although rarely).
What does Chambers have?
agister gets more hits on Google
(m)agister
ixtle gets more hits than istle on Google.
It's down to the setter. Does the setter have a preferred dictionary?
(M)Agister
Has to be agister because of the 'drop marks' wordplay (magister is a word, but magistor isn't)
Yes, of course the word for licensed teacher is magister not magistor.
Question Author
chambers say's agistor or agister, i thought i'd missed something in the clue. the same with istle and ixtle
I have always used 'Istle' as the British spelling, 'Ixtle' being the Mexican Spanish.

Of course both are correct.

thans to all
My first thought was IXTLE was because the letter are found in teXTILEs (or tEXTILes) but, as someone pointed, so is texTILES- although I think IXTLE is more 'in' whereas ISTLE is more 'at the end'. So I'd have a slight preference for ixtle. But surely both will be accepted
