Wow. This is a tough one! I have worked out that a number of clues are linked to the fact that it's the birthday crossword but quite a lot of the rest have me stumped.

Am I alone in this?

Keep that rubbish out of Crosswords, please ;-)

sorry I didn't reply sooner. SWMBO had guests for lunch (I thought I would be excused. Fat Chance!! they've just gone...).

How about:
1930, where fifty per cent of history is still (4,4,5)

I have h?v? for the first word so I assume that's "half"
or
For a song in Italian, what a carry on (7)

They might unlock a corner for me

steven

Half past seven

Half (50 per cent) past’s (history is) even (still)

Cheaply

Che (what in Italian) a ply (carry on)
Half past seven (19:30) - 'half past's even'
Cheaply (for a song) 'che' (It. "what") + 'a ply' (a carry on)
Hi Steven, just a tip - adding clue numbers does help, especially on a Jumbo grid. :-)

Thank you both very much. I'll see whether they unlock the rest for me. I'll probably be back later but I'll try to crack some (or, optimistically, all) for myself

Well, the help certainly was great. I've managed quite a lot of the puzzle now, though to be honest, some of the answers are simply the only things that I could see fitted. However I'm still stuck in the top right hand quarter. May I ask for one of them and see if I can move forward again, please
1930 for Chinese show in Birmingham with parts exchanged. (4,2,3,5)
I do have a few letters but I don't know if they will help
steven
Year of the Horse
Question Author
Is it "year of the horse? that was 1930. But I don't get the play of words
steven
Horse of the Year (Show) is in Birmingham, swap parts
Question Author
Thanks cashier. I was typing my latest note when you sent the answer. But I still don't get the "parts exchanged" bit
Question Author
