Nice thought Elliemay1 but like you I can't really parse it. I think we are all thinking of a vehicle but "one of these" could refer to loads of other things!
2.Roller?
Marten - any tram reversed
JJ, can you explain that?
One of these = any tram
A sound way = N E tram
smooth reverse = marten
I prefer a roller(bird)is a way to smooth something and a Rolls Royce reverses.Still cannot understand your parsing.
Question Author
Although I quite like roller it is a bird which therefore disqualifies itself. I think "one of these"which may not be a vehicle anyway will be on the outside with something else (smooth) in the middle. I may be totally wrong of course!
Maxy, a bird is an animal and I seem to remember, although not sure, seeing Fulmar as one of the answers.
Sorry Danny - I don't like Roller anyway. There is no (sounds like / different spelling). It is "roller" and "roller". And just having Roller as something that reverses is very weak.

There are few synonyms for "one of these" but any (+ something) is close
Any tram could be described as "one of these" (trams)
A sound like for any = N E
Then give it a smooth reverse and NE tram = marten (marten is NE tram backwards)

I am not saying it is correct by any means but who knows?
ion sounds like iron but cant find a beastie
Question Author
How about marmot? sounds like mow to achieve a smooth finish inside tram backwards?
Looks good.
Maybe there's a word missing after 'smooth' in the clue. 'Marmot' would fit if it said e.g 'smooth finish' then a comma
Question Author
There aren't any commas in the whole quiz of 50 questions! I don't think the compiler will be that exact.
Question Author
I am not 100% happy with marmot but it is the best one yet I think.
Question Author
The quiz has to go off tomorrow and I am still not entirely happy with any answers for nos 1 & 2. If nothing better then I will be putting cosset for No.1 and either marmot or racoon for no.2. Any more help or advice would be welcome.
2 Could it be a jaguar? Or a cougar?

Only a guess as I suppose other cars also have this system
Question Author
Hi elliemay1. After your fantastic answer of lemur I am always very interested in your thoughts! I already have Jaguar for another clue and I had thought of cougar but I think the answer is probably a bit more cryptic. I am warming to racoon (i.e.oo(smooth) n (way) rac (car reversed).Marmot is another thought with tram reversed round mo (sounds like mow which would smooth a lawn? Keep hoping for a brainwave as I am not thrilled with any of them unlike lemur!!
I suggested RACOON but I don't think its right as it is not normally spelt - it's normally RACCOON-
Racoon is NOO CAR backwards though which sounds (and clue says sound) a bit like new car and a new car should run smoothly
