I am not sure about Origami
Japanese art (Origami) = Gam (school of whales) + I (one following) O(ld), but I don't know why RI = watercolourist?
JJ, Ri - watercolourist is in Chambers. 'Member of the Royal Institute of Painters In Water Colours'.

Many thanks Nac, I shall have to remember that one!
JJ, I'd never seen it before - which is why I ignored that one. I knew the answer was correct, but not why!

Matakari, to give you the satisfying feeling of finishing this off yourself, I'll give just a hint for 3 D. Community is the definition.

Thanks, jj109 and Neveracrossword! The unclued lights are the ones casting a dark shadow over my progress now! I've got 1(A), 5(D) and 10(D), but am lost as to how to match these with the others. My ACROSS:
12 B?TS, 24 NO??E and 42 L?A?E?TE?E?E?T ( two words?)
My DOWN: 16 C?M???I?L?S ( two words? ) and ?C?T?
Thanks in advance for any further help!

42 is 2 words ...1st word is lease
the headword is in row 10 ...then you can look up the defns in chambers
Matakari, glad I could help - and glad you're getting help with the theme. (I loved 'a dark shadow over my progress'! )

Thanks, Roslyn, I'm getting there! Verification for 33(D),please: begins with S and ends with A? Unfortunately, I'm without my prized Chambers which I had to reluctantly leave behind because of weight restrictions by Ryanair. But will certainly a priority on my return to Crayford.
How do we count the rows, from left to right or otherwise?
Matakari, rows are down - 1,
2
3
Columns are across the way - 1 2 3 . .
Row 10 is the 10th one down.
My 33 D doesn't begin with S, nor end with A.

Thanks, Neveracrossword!
You're welcome, Matakari. Hope you get the letters for 33 D sorted, and the rest of the theme too. Once you've got some thematic elements sorted, the others come together. Having Chambers isn't essential - and you can always confirm things on here if need be!
