Maybe by is parsed as of and man is the lover(as in he's my man)

Yes 'E' for Ecstasy.
Can see i's l and e but not the if man. Obviously dependency is the definition. Danny I think op is asking for the ofman bit
Can't parse 'of man' as lover.
Maybe by is parsed as of and man is the lover(as in he's my man)
That must be it danny

Thanks guys, I guess that must be it ( although I think it’s a poor clue)
although I think it’s a poor clue.
I agree with you.
LEMAN means 'lover' and it is to the left of IS (and it's hiding 'of' = 'by' as you say).
...although OF should somehow equate to 'drug dependency' - but i can't find any justification for that.
sorry, IS is to the left of lover = LEMAN....

Hi Maisie, you are right leman does mean lover. However in this case where does the word drug (E) fit in - in the clue?
Maise, isn't leman actually to the right of is?. I took left to mean the 'l' after is.
I agree that your parse is rather better than mine.
sorry, 'dependency' is the def, of course - but why 'of' for drug?
the clue would work fine without 'drug'!
Maisie the 'e'(ecstasy ) is the drug. I find this clue is very confusing as far as parsing goes.
Are there special instructions with this crossword?
Maybe ignore a wording the clue
The only certainty is that Isle of Man is the correct answer.
dannyk13, 'e' for drug is quite common but the 'e' in LeMAN would cover that part of the answer.
I'm thinking along the same lines as bobbinwales - special instructions?
