Help with Scottish word, I think.

Still need to figure out last letter of 48a.
The first row gives the title and the author is easy to spot.
I don't know how the last row represents 25d and Deathblow, if it is the same book.

That book's title originates from an earlier, very famous book - and a name in that one is what can be found (remembering 'shattered') in the bottom row, along with another result of the 25 D.
Thank you Neveracrossword. I can see 11 possibilities for 1 across assuming I have the right first letter and 2 for 6 across. Even with 2 lists of authors in front of me and your guidance on where to look I am at a complete loss. I can see what is happening in the bottom row but the first part is a complete mystery. The pain from a stress fracture in my leg isn't helping me to think clearly.
