I suspect the answer has to be correct, but can somebody please reassure me it is fair to categorise it as a pretty poor clue :- What men assume, mostly, party whip goes around for (6) C?A?A? I can only think it can be CRAVAT, with the wordplay being CAT (whip) around RAV (almost RAV(E)), but for the definition to be "What men assume" is surely feeble.

Assume means to put on, wear in this context... but I have seen far better clues.
