I have answers to both but do not know extra letters from wordplay.
14. Have to live with member of human race (4) Have is the def and begins with BE.
16. Humble home of football manager? (5) Humble is the def and answer is A???E.

For the endgame, I have the verse but no idea how to apply it to the grid. I see the brave man in the grid but don't know how to replace it. Cannot see others in the grid yet.
Since there are 16 extra letters, 4 words of 4 answer length are affected?

Like you I am stuck at the endgame. I think 2 of the words to be replaced have 7 letters and 2 have four. I have 17 letters from clues to go into grid so some of the existing letters in the 4 words in the grid must not be replaced.

The rest of the first verse of the relevant poem mentioned word, book, kiss and sword. My guess is that a synonym for each of these four words replaces the relevant four words in the grid. However not having much luck in doing this so I might be wrong.

Pomona, I found that one tricky too - but got it from having so few of the extra letters. Once I'd ticked off those I'd used, there wasn't a lkot left! And there's also a big hint -on this thread - about how many letters need changed.
