Aphanite sounds extremely likely. Thank you, Mark. I must rethink 12 down which is: "Obscure quote involving doctor from the south".
8 letters. I had "esoteric" then changed it to "eclectic". I thought "cite" was quote but, to be honest the 2doctor from the south" didn't quite work! So for that one I now only definitely have: e-l-----i-.
