saladdodger, the letters 'removed' are to be imagined piled on top of each other - the triples are 1 higher than the doubled (3 letter) sequences which are 1 higher than everything else. So, there are only 8 high areas.
Anagram the doubled letters for the 3,9 (Darwin is relevant) and the tripled letters for the 4 (a general term for the first one).
