sit is hidden in the clue between collecterSITem
...and Sit, take, an exam say?

Many thanks FB and NACW!
I can see the attraction of 'sit' (being in the clue itself) but just looking at definitions, 'set' offers a double def - 'to take' as in for something to set or gel, and collectors collect items in sets. I don't think the def is precise enough for 'sit' but it's probably right.
I agree with NaC's thought & is how I saw it - "Take/sit an exam (eg)".
There shouldn't be any ambiguity with a three letter answer where the 2nd letter is unchecked. I agree - the answer will most likely be 'sit' but there's a possibility of reading it as a double def clue and that makes it a bad clue as I see it.
