PASSENGER
I am really stuck on 23 d which is my last one, and would appreciate help. Beggar once hit chap with broken bottle
?L?SIMAN.
Please ignore my question. Had an error
Question Author
Thank you, Professor Maisie.

Why passenger?
Second part of the highlighted word can be defined as a paying passenger.
I am also confused by the unclued words.
For the first syllable, I can see 10d, 29d but not 28d (reply).
For the second syllable, I can see 30a and 18d but not the third.
For the whole word, I can see 16a (far-fetched) and 20d, but not sure about the third.
28 down (reply synonym) - given under the first syllable in Chambers Crossword dictionary.
10 down is your missing one for the second syllable (think of a list of entrants for a race)
The whole word is a species of 11 across. To be honest I liked 16 across as a definition.

So did I, Novalis. It made me smile!

...and I thought I was being clever with the passerine entry. :-(
Thanks novalis.

That's another notch on my Spectator belt, thanks to all the help on here. x
Great, Tilly2 - glad to hear about your notches. Your enthusiasm and appreciation (of both the puzzle and the help you get) are wonderful (and balm to the soul on some trying weeks!).

Can somebody please help me with 23d...... Beggar once hit chap with broken bottle. (8) ?l?ssman

Thanks.
(Bernie) Glassman (hit chap with broken bottle is to Glass a man)
Chambers has 'glassman... a beggar hawking glass as a pretext, (hist).
Thank you both.
Thanks for that NAC, I didn't check Chambers (Stupid of me) I went into reading about Bernie Glassman( regarding what he did for the homeless and how he got involved)
Thanks, Klazo - I'm always happy to look in Chambers!

...are you potty!
Tilly2, no - maybe a saddo? I always like to have a reason to check words, and I sometimes just browse anyway!
