Great, Matakaari. I was stunned that you had most of the letters in such a short answer,needed only a vowel... and still asked for help!

Thanks for all the hints which help me to better understand the technique of the EV setters. I see the clashing letters and want to be certain that I have them in order. For example the first clash 10a/2d:
EDIT/AMEN, D and M clash. So, letters from ACROSS from left to right should be: D….
And from DOWN should be: M…
Is this the right way to go?

Yes - but take them column by column left to right

2ndcolumn, 4th column, 6th column, 8th column 10th column

You get what first appears to be 2 non words, but if you google them together they are in fact words and point somewhere

Matakari, I'm out, without my grid - but I remember that if you read across the way, from left to right, the first word spells out DU...
The other starts ME...

PS If you still don't see it, just use an anagram solver to untangle each set of five letters.

Thanks, Matakari, I bet you wish you'd been able to follow JJ's instructions hours and hours ago? As you said, maybe your brain was overheating! Finishing off the last stage of the puzzle wasn't too tricky, I'm sure you've seen that.
