Hi Bernie - hmm, would it not need to be "gladdened" to fit the past tense of the clue? Hence my obscure punt...
I'm confused!

LiK has referred to the first D but I can only see one in the post and 'gladded' appears to fit with what's there anyway.
My mistake, Buen, apologies - I'd got the word ending in 'D' in my head to allow for the tense!

Thank you all for your help. I thought it should end in d also being past tense. I have never heard the word gladden before but it seems to be a proper word.
You mean 'gladdeD'... ;-)
