Good morning, this week’s EV looks like an interesting challenge, with more than meets the eye without doubt. I’ve made some headway, but am not absolutely sure of my findings yet. Help with the following would be welcomed. Thanks in advance!

Bobboin, Matakari, 32 is Uproar, outrage, noun. U, university, Pro, supporting and Ar(ts), half cut.

13 The clue is the next one after the answer exocarp andthe one before flutina and so starts with either an e or an f

33 is the clue following uproar and is the last but one clue and as you have solved the last clue.this answer must start with u,v,w or x

1a comes alhpabetitically before asianic and so cannot be gusto

4 is a French port and starts alhabetically after beeglue and before cilia

17 is an obscure word but has a three letter word for a tavern inside a3 letter word for hurry. It is alhabetically before idle and after heiress

Good day, now that all the clues have been answered, the grid entry has become quite intriguing, with pencil and erasure, without forgetting the alphabetical input. I wonder what role the two ten-letter words and the thirteen-letter one will play. And just to be safe, am I right to suggest that top Across grid of nine letters starts with P and bottom with T? I've worked out the right side down of 12 letters to be P..........N

Matakari, you're right with your sentence at the end, about the P and the T words. Yes, it is intriguing to work out the 10-letter, 13-letter stuff - and I'm sure you will twig.

 

PS The alphabetical stuff is of no relevance now - it would have helped you  earlier if you hadn't got terribly confused about it!

Matakari, a tip... there are plenty of entries that can be put in the grid straight away, others may seem tricky initially. If you put in enough of the definite ones, you should soon see what to do with the others. The crossing letters from the long answers you have already put in should be a big help in filling up the grid.

Many thanks, NACW! I had a substantial number of sure answers in the grid, then observed that other entries looked like non-words until it dawned on me that the missing letters were part of the  gimmick for this craftily constructed puzzle. I am done now except for the last two four- letter words in the top right hand corner. I’m glad I did not throw in the sponge!

Matakari, glad you're coping with that bit. I think you threw in the sponge where most of the clues and the alphabetical stuff was concerned! I'm puzzled about the remaining 4-letter words - if you have all the answers, there will be only two that can go there, and if  you have the thematic element, you will know which letter, which letters, are not entered in the grid.

matakari -I am done now except for the last two four- letter words in the top right hand corner....The across one is actually 5 letters..... and am sure it's been answered on another thread...
