Usually when the French is in a clue the answer has la or le in it.

I can confirm the pattern is ?O?E. 4 letters, not a consonant more or less.

^^ That's why I was querying at 18.54  ... clue said (4) ??t?? which is 5 letters.  Therefore ditto looks good?

It's 4 letters, sometimes it is hard to read scooke's OP as they are usually all over the place, letter count is not always correct 
 have grid in front of me and pressreader is the same

If pressed, I'd go with CORE. Assuming a rugby reference, could it be a homophone of cor! which is probably what a lot of people did after France beat Namibia 96-0.
