13 - sejeant

Have a look at Big Dave's Crossword Blog - very helpful.

Matakari, it'd be good if you gave the important information contained in the preamble....

Question Author

Many thanks, Depresion and NACW! here is the preamble to this puzzle:

All ten-letter entries are unclued, each comprising two words suggested by a quotation ( in ODQ8 ), derived from single letters, when read in clue order, to  be removed from each of 17 clues prior to solving. Unchecked letters in the unclued entries could be arranged to suggest SUNDAYS SEEM A JOKE. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended.

Thanks, Matakari.

8 Bregma

Thanks, JJ109, I just got 14. Thi looks like the final batch for which I seek help, thanks in advance!

16 Proton

20 Piculs

4 Savannah

19 Yexing

21 Limens

PS You'll crack EV soon, I'm sure!

Matakari, did the two big batches of answers enable you to finish off this one?

Question Author

Thanks, NACW, the grid is filled except for the Unclueds. I seem to miss something in the preamble that’s keeping me back. For example I have the following Unclued, but cannot see the two words:

?AC?AS?L?O

Where have I gone wrong? Thanks again!

You haven't gone wrong

*** Leo

that should help with the other unclueds

J.A.C.K.A.S.S. Leo

Have you worked out the surplus letters?

Question Author

Thanks, that was a massive hint, JJ109! Working out surplus letters is one of my weakest areas. But my other Unclueds are the following:

A?SPAR?LE?
GENETSI?BA
HI?NYCEC?L
?EY?RESC??
C?D?TE?LS?

All letters are correct Matakari except the T in the last one.It should be an I (from Topolski)

Question Author

Thanks, JJ109, I inadvertently put a T in the last one. I'm happy that they are all correct, but I'm still at a loss to determine the two-word bit. Another hint would be appreciated, thanks! Time for me to put this one to rest!

Matakari, I don't think there's much more that can be given by way of  a hint! The two word things results in entries being matakaribanana or NACapple - the first word falls into one category, the second into another (and the categories apply to all of the entries). There are significant words to be gleaned from the extra letters, even if you don't have many.

The splits of the two words in your order are

3 - 7

5 - 5

5 - 5

6- 4

6 -4

The first words are types of something, with the exception  of one, which is the "name" of a particular one. The second words are all "names" of particular ones of another group

Remember jacka.s.s. - leo
