Miser has kindly asked me to start Chain 3 so here goes ...

The idea of the game is that the setter poses an original home-made clue which everybody is invited to solve.  The poster who solves the clue first (hopefully identified by the setter) is then invited to post their own original clue, easy or cryptic.

My clue:  Lightly touch a seabird would indicate a design. (7)

'mallet' was correct, canary

//The modern English word mace entered Middle English from Old French mace, ("large mallet/sledgehammer, mace") //

Yes,fair enough and thank you Eliemay1 - at the time however I was less confident 🙂.

Ooops, I missed catalogue confirmation. Here is my clue. I hope it's not too specialist.

Little Maureen will unearth a bent nail for an artist (10)

Modigliana (Amedeo)

Crikey Elliemay, there's no fooling you is there (although I spell it Modigliani).

Little Maureen = MO

Unearth = DIG

Bent nail = LIAN

an = 1 or I

Artist = Modigliani

It's difficult when setting "specialist" clues to judge what is well known in the "outside world".  Most people know Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci, but how many outside the Art World know who painted Ruby Loftus Screwing a Breech-Ring (it was Dame Laura Knight and can be seen in the Imperial War Museum. Dame Laura was only the second woman to be made Associate of the Royal Academy. She was appointed as an official war artist in 1942 and was commissioned to paint the Nuremberg War Trials in 1945).

Enough of my rambling, over to you for the next clue Elliemay.

sounds like a line of people approach a wild animal for a fruit (8)

A shot in the dark - Cucumber ????

Or is that a vegetable?

Correct, canary.

Botanically it's a fruit because it has seeds

Wow, I am surprised. So, here we go again :-

Tea for the French king (7)

Charles

Yes, quite right (too easy????)

beneath a fruit is majestic (7)

That one's got the grey matter stumped for a while.

A flash of inspiration, and :- Sublime ? ? ? ? ?

Yes Canary!

My stock  is getting very low (one of which I can no longer parse, so if the setter can't do it, whatchane the solver !!!)

I venture into the world of Art again with this one.

Artist gets a vehicle for Ms Gardner or a horse for ten (10)
