3d was Essex = E(ast) S(ussex) backwards and forwards = ESSE + X (extra letter) and it is imperative that the extra letter to this clue is an "X" to ensure that the Roman Numerals add up to 1/4 of a thousand!

really the adding thing doesn't necessarily help the solver does it, it's just there for the setter, though one needs the pairs of letters I suppose
