...sort of anagrams...look at your letters that you have in 4d....they are in .....Guess at some letters that could follow the pattern then angarm them and you get 5-3   which is a phrase which goes with the title word.....I think!!

Thanks, Fleshpots - I couldn't come up with anything subtle!

Yippee !  Finished ..... off to bed now. lol

Is 40a an anagram of a word meaning "long narrative poem, impressive, large scale?"

Scratch that, she's in the can. Phew...I made a real meal of that bad boy! It all became 42a eventually but it took some fiddling.

I must be being obtuse here....i understand the ordering of the letters follow a system but do you then have to use the letters  to create another word? Take 4 down the missing unchecked letter the fourth must be f,g,h,i,j or k?

how do you decide?

Johnpiper, you have to pick the letters so that they form a thematic word, part of a phrase... I think the very first answer on this thread gave a huge hint to that word, and to what was going on, was to be done.

PS Some of the (possible ) letters you gave aren't in the phrase, list, mentioned in the preamble.

Thanks

i have it now. Finally.

tricky puzzle this week

A lovely puzzle from Cheesecracker this week. I had to work a bit to establish the last few 'unclueds' but it was very satisfying to have completed the puzzle in under an hour

The preamble usually instructs solvers to 'ignore an apostrophe' but presumably those was obvious from the context
