I'm sure the answer is WASTAGE, where 'used to be' is 'was', 't' is time and 'age' is 'grow old'.

But how does 'exhausting' become 'wastage'? They are different parts of speech, and not synonyms as far as I can see.

Wastage is expelled through the exhaust

Question Author

barry1010 agreed, but 'wastage' is a noun and 'exhausting' is a participle. Normally a crossword clue of Guardian standard would match parts of speech.

To put it another way, they are not interchangeable:

'The run was exhausting' is not the same as 'the run was wastage'.
