Stressed - desserts (fools) reversed

6a is SCORIAC.

The quote is from a poem by Emily Bronte. Let me know if you want more...

This was such a good puzzle, and Mr Magoo's last one, I think it's a shame if the theme is just given away too soon...It's a novelty getting to savour a Speccie puzzle!

Nonetheless, many thanks to scorpiojo and oftpuzzled, so just 12 down left, (if 'eta' is right for 18 across -greek character held by three others - but why?)

Look at first letters of words in the clue

Quinol. Eta is in Beta, Theta and Zeta, other Greek characters, letters.

The letters forming eta are contained in three other Greek letters - beta, zeta and theta

also yes , why walsall and not haworth

Thanks, Quinol.

The word Beta holds, contains, Eta... and so do Theta and Zeta, so it seemed fine to me.

Can I check 21a?

Sad old monk has appendix removed (5) Is it TRESS? Ta

No, Trist, old word for sad. Trappist was the monk, remove the app(endix).

Thanks!

Fleshpots...you're very welcome!

That was my last one! Definitely more challenging than recent puzzles. Imo Mr Magoo was the toughest of the current setters, so it remains to be seen what his departure will mean for the puzzle moving forward. More Doc?

Great seeing Mark Goodliffe (Magoo) in Countdown's latter stages recently. He comes across as a modest and unassuming chap. Arthur will ace it tomorrow, however :)

Sad to see Magoo retire from the Spectator. He'll have more time to help people solve sudokus on Cracking the Cryptic

Roslyn (or anyone else who has a scan).

Could I please also have the scan for 2568? My Brewer's is the Millennium edition, and the local library service doesn't have the 20th edition.

My email address is [email protected].

Many thanks.

I'm posting under 2660 as I don't think anyone is looking at 2658 any more.

Neveracrossword, many thanks for sending me the scan. My grid is now complete.

Thanks, mogs... I didn't post on here that I'd sent you a copy - I did that for an ABer last week and it disappeared, didn't arrive (after three attempts!). Glad you got the puzzle finished. There wasn't the same sense of satisfaction with that one, seeing as most of us needed to see the relevant page.
