That's only six letters...

As a Yorkshireman I looked earlier still nothing 🤔

Thank you all of you for trying to help, I will work on it again tomorrow and see what I can get.  Bill

SAYINGS

(I'd check your 3rd letter A)

Question Author

John T.  Thank you so very much you are correct - the answer is 'sayings'.  The third letter A should have been a Y  as you suggested.  The question I went wrong on was Early 19th slang for 'tobacco'  (5) and I had put 'bacca' instead of 'baccy'.

I had spent hours trying to work it out so thanks for your help.  Bill

It wasn't a word in the Yorkshire dialect meaning, "utterances" then?

I'm still not clear what the actual clue was.

I wouldn't mind but I found a couple of Yorkshire dialect dictionaries online and went through the S-words looking for a word that fitted but I clearly wasted my time...

...I'm fine...I'll get over it...

...eventually...

I did the same, thecorbyloon, but found nothing - and I was puzzled anyway by the clue - why the 2 dialect clues were given

I thought "sayings" from the start (the two examples being Yorkshire sayings) but put off completely by the wrong placing of letters - rather a waste of quite some time.

I thought SAYINGS but then realised it would be SAYINS ie, no G if any Yorkshireman I know said it.

Sorry I confused you all, myself as well.  The question was.

13a.  Utterances.  Using dialect clues 'Thas a reight (7. across)'  and 'Am feeling (1 Down) today' ... Typical Yorkshire  (7)

The answers to 7a was 'divvy' and the answer to 1 Down was 'middlin'.

Hope you can understand now how hard it was to understand and I do appreciate your time and effort in helping me a beginner in this difficult crossword in The Dalesman magazine.  Bill

lol, how about a Latin crossword next time, Bill...

Don't take their remarks too seriously Bill, although ultimately pointless they still enjoyed the task while it lasted 😁😀

Question Author

Question Author
