This is a long shot but worth a go. Very cryptic crossword that takes me ages every month, but I just can't get this last one.

Progestin
Sorry shaneystar but progestin is a hormone and does not fit in with the cryptic clue either.
The answer is protectin (protect + in) which is a glycoprotein that restricts the lysis or breakdown of human red blood cells.
Quite right U ....I hovered between the two but although had heard of Progestin had never heard of protectin which of course fits the clue a treat !!
Welcome fellow BMS , ( I presume)

I also usually do the MLW crossword every month, but am so fed up with the tortuous clues, obscure words and alternative spellings, that I didn't even bother last month. I haven't even seen this months yet.

Now I know someone else is struggling, I'll post any problem clues next month, or look out for your postings.

PS Have you also noticed how often someone from Blackpool or Derby always wins ?
Question Author
Oo..er, I'm that person from Blackpool I'm afraid, but I'm no BMS just an MLA. I am a crossword nut and usually through downright bloody- mindedness I get it finished. That and an ancient medical dictionary which contains words the new ones don't have. Thanks for the answer and if you need any help in future I will try and help anyone, that way the money might go somewhere else for a change!
Sorry, I should have said fellow Laboratory worker. And though I'm saying you guys in Blackpool win a lot , if you look through past issues you'll find that a certain person in Liverpool wins quite often too!

I'll definitely post next time.

Does your lab still get Laboratory News ? No one in our lab does anymore.

Their crossword was much more straightforward, and they even use to have a free lottery competition.

Hi Eddie,
I know what you mean about Liverpool winning a lot too, but we have won about 10 times now so we are not complaining. I must confess though that sometimes I work out the answer and haven't the foggiest idea what it means, that's when the clever folks help me out. We still get the Lab news, but didn't for ages. I noticed it was delivered to one of the Pathologists and managed to get a copy. If you want I can send one to you and once you have sent it in they should send you a copy every month. That's what happened to me, it's addressed to me now as well. I don't know if you can put your lab address on here or not do you? Let me know anyhow.
Joanna
Hi Joanna

I wouldn't want you to go to the hassle of sending me the Lab News crossword, and I'm never short of Crosswords to do! I've been too busy to post after doing all the Saturday and Sunday crosswords !

But I look forward to posting problems MLW clues next time
Question Author
Hi Eddie,
It's not a problem if I can find one. I know where you work from previous MLW's. You can always chuck it if you have too many to do, I won't be offended.
Incidentally you and I made our own grids that time and both won!!
Good luck anyhow!
Joanna
Cheers Joanna

I remember I used to win The Lab News Crossword and Lottery several times too !

I can't resist a prize crossword !

Hi again,
Have you ever won a biggie? The best I've ever done is 25 runner up on the Sunday Express, apart from MLW of course. Some people at work say we only win 'cos no-one else enters, which is obviously not true, although I can understand people giving up on it sometimes!!! They repeat questions a lot too, which is why I keep a copy and how I know you have won it a lot.
Anyway I will be in touch next month no doubt.
Joanna
No , I've not won any biggies, 50 from The Sunday Mirror Sudoku, a couple of 20 from The Daily Mail, a couple of 20 Smiths vouchers from The Times, a gold pen from The Sunday Times, and several DVDs, CDs and Books.

But, no 1000 or 1500 prizes from the big Sunday papers prizes.

I'll keep trying, though !
