Cruciverbali is right about che being Italian for which, and I bow to Samurite's knowledge of Spanish idiom.
My working out was that a Manila is a type of cheroot and to root for someone is to support, which could include applaud.
But I'm not happy about the clue. If it had said Italian rather than Spanish I think it would have been clearer.
