What always intrigues me about Crossword Prizes is this:
If you are able to complete the Crossword faultlessly, then Chambers (or any other Dictionary or Thesaurus) is something of a redundant prize!

Almost certainly not, yapisle - in general GCSE/O-Level Maths and a calculator will suffice.

CCD is a nice volume to have in your cruciverbal library, Ash but it's not actually the most useful tome. I for one would like to win a more contemporary edition of the Dictionary itself.

Have been too busy of late to tackle this, but will certainly have a go at this one. I got 'o' level Maths, but it is a little rusty to say the least!

it seems to me that with 44 variables and only 24 equations each having a minimum of three variables with limited comparable equations, i dont think this can be merely solved on pure mathematics.(unlike previous numerical listener crosswords). the last line of the intro "clues more helpful than they at first expected" must mean a code involved

Number the clues 1 to 25 for reference and designate each cell according to the capital letter at the start of each row and the lower case letter at the head of each column, again for reference ( eg the first cell is Aa and the last Xj)

(i) Consider clue 14 and threby deduce the digits that must appear in cells Xf, Pf and Rg

(ii) Consider Clue 9 and deduce the digit in cell Uj

(Iii) Clue 23 gives the digit in cell Uf

(iv) Solve Clue 18 to obtain values for V, t and x

(v) Clue 24 gives the digit in cell Jf and clue 1 in cell Fc

(vi) Clue 9 for S.............................................

I have completed all of the questions but I can never understand the Listener instructions. Does anyone have a clue about M & m?
