Having trouble appreciating the full reasoning behind the answer for 20a.

Man a data recorder, we hear? That could be right (10)
?A?A?O?U?R

CATALOGUER fits the pattern and the data recorder part of the clue but I can't see how it relates to the rest.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Cat a logger
'Cat' (slang for 'man') + 'a logger' (sounds like) (?)
try saying it as if you were a beatnik in the 1950s, which Telegraph compilers probably were
man = cat in jazz parlance
+ a + logger (someone who records), spelt loguer because "we hear"

Thanks!

I thought about "cat" being slang for man but thought it was a bit loose and not very Daily Telegraph.

Whatever next daddios?
♫♪"Nice!"♫♪
I think the idea is that 'man' itself is being used in a slangy 1950s way. Hey, man, dig the cool vibe that cat's playing!
